Astragalus root (Astragalus mongholicus) raíz de Astragalus:  A wonderful immune system tonic, Astragalus root is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Thought to work by stimulating T cell counts, Astragalus assists the body in fighting infection and is being studied for use against cancer and heart disease.

Avocado seed (Persea americana) hueso de Aguacate: The Avocado is native to the Americas and is a virtual pharmacy on a tree. All parts of the fruit, including the leaves have been used medicinally for symptoms as wide-ranging as dandruff, parasites, low libido, rheumatic pains and dysentery. When the seed is cut, the juice it produces turns a dark rust color and was used by the Conquistadores as an ink for letters back to Spain. Here we use it for its astringent effect on the veins.

Black Cohosh root (Actaea racemosa) raíz de Cimicifuga: These days Black Cohosh is almost synonymous with menopause and women’s conditions, but not so long ago its analgesic properties were applied to rheumatoid and muscle pain and its ability to relax smooth muscle was used against hypertension. It is an herb that is native to North America and was used extensively by the Native Americans tribes. Do not use during pregnancy.

Calendula flower (Calendula officinalis) flor de Calendula:Calendula is first aid in a flower! Chamomile flower (Matricaria recutita) flor de Manzanilla: one of the most popular Mexican herbs, Chamomile is a gentle but effective botanical that acts on the nervous system, the digestive system, the skin and the respiratory system. Anti-inflammatory and pain relieving, it also promotes tissue repair and can act as a mild expectorant. Here it is used for its ability to quiet a nervous stomach and relax an anxious heart. It gives good, reliable results.

Chaste Tree, fruit (Vitex agnus-castus) fruta de Agnocasto: Chaste Tree berry or Vitex is what is known in the herbal tradition as an “amphoteric”. An amphoteric herb has the ability to act in seemingly opposite ways. With Vitex, this applies to its hormone balancing effect which promotes estrogen or progesterone production, depending on which is needed. This effect is believed to be possible because Vitex’s action is on the brain and not the ovaries. For this reason, Vitex is held in high esteem as a woman’s herb. Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) corteza de Viburno: Native to North America, Cramp Bark is one of the herbs we come to know through Native American tribes who used it as a woman’s herb.  Anti-spasmodic and relaxing to the muscles of the reproductive system, it makes an excellent remedy for menstrual cramps.  Cramp Bark is also generally relaxing to lower back pain and the smooth muscles that line the arteries. Find it in these La Yerberia formulas:

Damiana leaf (Turnera diffusa) hoja de Damiana: This Mexican herb has always enjoyed a reputation as an aphrodisiac, and it turns out is does have some estrogenic as well as androgenic properties. It is also toning to the kidneys and bladder. Calming and nourishing, Damiana has been shown to heal nerves and promote mental clarity. Not for use during pregnancy.

Echinacea root (Echinacea angustifolia) raíz de Echinacea: Possibly the most famous herb in modern use, Echinacea is a specific for infections, colds and flu. Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum) raíz de Eupatorio: Gravel Root works on the urinary and reproductive systems to add strength and encourage disinfection. Through these actions it can have an effect on rheumatic conditions, gout and stones.  Cooling and analgesic, it also can help with incontinence.

Hawthorne leaf, flower, fruit (Crataegus laevigata) hoja, flor, y fruta de Espino Blanco: It is interesting that in the United States it is the berry that is used medicinally. In Europe it is the leaf and flower. Most of the scientific research indicating this herb’s usefulness in hypertension has been conducted on the leaf and flower, not the berries. Think of Hawthorne not only for hypertension and tachycardia, but also for strengthening blood flow in low thyroid conditions.

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) raíz de Palo Dulce: On its own, Licorice excels at soothing irritated skin and is useful in salves.  However it is also a wonderful blending herb, able to meld the qualities of other herbs and lending a hint of sweetness to herbal teas. Marshmallow leaf and root (Althaea officinalis) hoja y raíz de Malva:  Marshmallow is classified as a demulcent herb which means it becomes slimy in water. This “slime” is soothing to all mucus membranes and can be a relief to an esophagus irritated by acid reflux or a urethra that burns from a urine infection. The mucilaginous aspects of this herb are destroyed with high heat and are unavailable in high alcohol preparations, so it is important to use Marshmallow as a water extract and never use boiling water to make this tea. Meadowsweet, leaf and flower (Filipendula ulmaria) Ulmaria, hoja y flor: Filipendula is Meadowsweet’s new scientific name, the old name was Spiraea and it is from Spiraea that we get the word “aspirin”. Pau d'Arco, bark (Tabebuia avellanedae) corteza de Pau d'Arco is a South American herb that is renowned as a blood and vein restorative and is recognized as an important herb for treating tumors.
